CARNWATH Gala Queen elect Hannah Stuart remained ice cool during Saturday's crowning ceremony at the village gala day — despite a last minute change of venue.

The 11-year-old Carnwath Primary School pupil's coronation came in the unexpected venue of the Town Hall, after heavy rain forced organisers to move proceedings indoors.

"I was nervous on the morning of the gala," Hannah said.

"But the day was an amazing experience and I would love to do it again.

"All my family and friends being there made it more special.

"It was ok being crowned in the Town Hall because it kept me dry!"

The Gala Day experience capped a lively time for Hannah.

She was joint Dux medalist at her school and also won the three-mile Newbigging Coronation Road Race, over the same course as the Red Hose Race, in Carnwath on Sunday June 22.

Carnwath Gala president David Gibson said that the youngster never stopped smiling during her big day.

If overhead conditions had been dry, David said that the crowning would have been staged in King George V Park. But the wet weather meant a last minute change of plan.

"There was a really heavy shower during the fancy dress procession," David said.

"It would have been unfair to keep them outdoors for any longer.

"It was an impressive crowning ceremony which went like clockwork. The Queen, crowning lady and court were spot on.

"The gala day is one of the few occasions where the community gets together.

"I would like to thank the village — and all the organisations who make the gala day possible — for their support."

David also praised the efforts of a team of helpers, who lifted a stage, decorated with flowers and a background picture of Couthally Castle, from the park to the town hall to allow events to continue under cover.

"I would like to thank the kids and adults who turned out for the procession," he said.

"It was a real shame that they all got soaked.

"And Carluke Primrose Orchestral Flute Band were fantastic on the day. They marched bravely on in the rain."

Bouncy castles, show rides, laser quest and freefall provided kids entertainment on the day.

And David insisted that the poor weather didn't prevent a reasonable turnout of spectators.

"We had a good crowd," he added. "The atmosphere was brilliant, despite the weather.

"However, I'm afraid to say that the numbers were down on last year, which is a shame.

"Interest in the gala day is dwindling a bit and we need a bit more support."

David is urging anyone wishing to support the 2009 Gala Day to attend the AGM in Carnwath Town Hall, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 2.
