Alasdair Gray's hidden masterpiece restored

A rediscovered art masterpiece could help deliver a much-needed tourism boost for Clydesdale.

The artwork was painted many years ago by acclaimed author and artist Alasdair Gray at the former Tavern public house in Kirkfieldbank.

For many years, it was hidden under coats of wallpaper and paint and was sadly forgotten about as the pub fell into disrepair.

Now, however, the mural - one of only two Alasdair painted outside Glasgow and by far his favourite - is being given a new lease of life.

For the Tavern has been reborn as the Riverside Lounge and the new owners have restored the mural to its former glory...much to Alasdair's delight.

To find out more about this fascinating tale, pick up a copy of this week's Carluke and Lanark Gazette, which is in the shops now priced just 42p.
