Andrew Gibb bids for Young Traditional Musician Award

A YOUNG accordionist from Biggar has won a place in the semi finals of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award for 2010.

Andrew Gibb (16) is one of the 12 musicians playing everything from pipes to harp, who will be competing for a place in the final.

The semi-final concert takes place in Coulter Hall, Coulter, on Saturday, October 3.

Six musicians selected that night will take part in the final at Celtic Connections in Glasgow on January 31. And that concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Scotland.

Andrew is currently preparing his pieces for the semi-finals but he already has a successful career under his belt, running his own dance band.

He also won the local heats and then the South of Scotland final of the Rotary Young Musician competition earlier this year.

Andrew, who is in 6th year at Biggar High, will soon have to decide on his career.

He said: "I will either go for civil engineering, or a music course at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama," he said. "I am leaning towards the traditional music."

The concert on Saturday, October 3, in Coulter starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are 8 and 6 concessions.
