THE Lottery has turned down Biggar’s application for funding for the new museum on the Stephens Garage site.

But, undaunted, the Museum Trust is going straight on to Plan B, tweaking the timescale and applying for a larger grant from windfarm money.

Trust chairman James Dawnay told the public at a meeting on Monday night that the fact people in the area had raised £420,000 in just five months last year – more than enough to buy the garage site – showed how valuable they felt the town’s museums were.

But with £1.5 million needed to convert the building, the Trust had hoped for £700,000 of Heritage Lottery Funding.

“To our great disappointment that was turned down,” he said, adding that the reasons were “difficult to fathom” although the fund had supported huge, iconic, projects such as the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

“Fortunately, we had a Plan B in our back pocket for that eventuality,” he said.
