Lady Home Hospital is honoured
PATIENTS and staff at the Lady Home Hospital in Douglas are celebrating after being awarded an accreditation honour by NHS Lanarkshire.
The award, given for a number of different aspects of community hospitals from cleanliness to food, was unveiled by South Lanarkshire community health partnership director Alan Lawrie to patients, staff and friends of the hospital.
Clinical nurse manager Rosie Lang said: "It gives the hospital a bit of credit for the good things we are doing at the hospital.
"Obviously it means a lot to us and it makes going through the whole process very worthwhile.
"The hospital is very accesible to the community and has so many different functions.
"Many patients can find it difficult to get to Wishaw General and can find it a bit daunting.
However, thanks to our minor injuries unit and our general care ,we manage to treat a lot of people here."
The Lady Home Hospital was commisioned in 1889 by the 12th Countess of Home.
The hospital was intended for medical and surgical treatment of local residents and admission was denied to those suffering from incurable or infectious diseases, lunatics, epileptics or midwifery cases.
Initially known as the Douglas Cottage Hospital, the first ambulance was donated by the British Red Cross Society in 1920.
In 1926 the hospital was handed over by Lord Home to the Douglas Community Trustees with the name being changed to the Lady Home Hospital in honour of its founder.
A maternity ward was opened in 1936 along with a female ward, an operating theatre and three staff bedrooms.
The formation of the NHS in 1948 meant that rising costs would no longer be a issue and today the hospital is now in the forefront of GP hospitals providing as it does in-patient care for a variety of illnesses, an active accident and emergency unit, out-patient facilities with visiting surgical and medical specialists.
Alan Lawrie said: "It's a great achievement for the Lady Home Hospital.
A lot of hard work has to go into achieving accreditation.
"It shows how good the hospital is and it scored very highly all the way through the process.
"In particular, the work on minor injuries and the cleanliness of the hospital were excellent.
"Community hospitals are very important in an area like Clydesdale and the Lady Home's performance is very high.
"They are providing excellent care over a wide range of services and for the rural areas of Clydesdale that's very important."
