Law travellers site granted
AN APPLICATION for a private gypsy/traveller family pitch has been given the go ahead by South Lanarkshire Council.
The site, at Waterlands Road in Law, was given permission by the planning committee — although it did so retrospectively, having received a complaint that travellers were occupying the site in October last year.
Clydesdale West councillor David Shearer was unhappy that the plans had been approved, particularly as it was classed as a greenbelt site.
He said: "Those people who objected to the plans came to me before the planning committee and I voiced their concerns.
"In my opinion this site should not have been developed for this purpose as it has been designated as greenbelt.
"However, the planners put their argument forward and it was approved."
The site will contain two residential caravans, two touring caravans, an amenity unit, space for two visiting caravans and three car parking spaces.
In a statement to the planning committee, applicant Billy Lee said he was not seeking to create a large site and confirmed he was renovating the Tileworks Cottage, which is also on the land.
Mr Lee also said that it was important for his family to be based in Law as his young son attended a local primary school.
And he claimed that area of Law had a history of use by travellers.
In total there were nine letters of objection.
