Mainshill opencast mine granted

THE controversial Mainshill opencast coal site near Douglas has been given the go ahead by South Lanarkshire Council's planning committee.

Despite more than 650 letters of objection and a campaign to stop the site, permission was granted at the council's planning committee meeting on Tuesday.

Around 1.7 million tonnes of coal and 160,000 tonnes of fireclay will be extracted over a five year period with 93 jobs being created.

The site is less than one kilometre from the Lady Home Hospital.

While the mine does have some local support, a number of leading politicians and local action group members were aghast at the decision.

The proposal will now go to the Scottish goverment for final approval.
