New Lanark Millworkers Reunited 2009

THERE are certain folk in New Lanark who couldn't believe their luck when Vera Lynn's wartime classic 'We'll Meet Again' surprisingly hit the top of the charts again.

It would be hard to think of better timing for the revival of this perfect musical soundtrack for a feast of raw nostalgia being served up at the historic village in a fortnight's time.

However, the second line of the song — 'Don't know where, don't know when' — definitely DOESN'T apply to the biggest ever reunion held in the village for the surviving former workforce of the mills, which closed 40 years ago.

The New Lanark Visitor Centre organisers have drawn up a full timetable for Millworkers Reunited on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, the World Heritage Site's main contribution to the Year of Homecoming.

It is hoped that former workers will return to the village from the places far and wide they travelled to after the once bustling mills, employing thousands, finally succumbed to 'progress' in 1968.

But the invitation to the weekend of events is open to any and all with family connections or an interest in the village's industrial past.

New Lanark's education and access officer Aynsley Gough said: "Some families still have several generations living in the village, dating back to the times when the cotton mills were still in operation.

"With a range of activities and exhibitions available this event is open to all. There will be guided tours, family history stands, ancestral workshops, storytelling and old-fashioned games."

Tickets, priced adult 7.50, child 6.50, are available in advance on 01555 661345, or from the New Lanark Gift Shop, including all the aforementioned activities, entry to New Lanark Visitor Centre and a cream tea.

There is a special price of only 2.50 for former New Lanark millworkers. For more information visit www.newlanark.org.
