New Lanark World Heritage Site...in 3D!

EVERY inch of Scottish World Heritage Site New Lanark is being painstakingly recorded in a new digital imaging study.

A team from Historic Scotland and Glasgow School of Art is creating detailed 3D virtual models of Scotland's five World Heritage sites, as well as five International Heritage Sites — known as the Scottish 10.

The technology was created by CyArk — a US non-profit organisation. It will also be used to survey Mount Rushmore.

Scotland's Minister for Culture, Mike Russell, announced the Scottish 10 project in July while visiting the iconic American landmark during preliminary work.

The imaging team is led by Douglas Pritchard, visualization chief at Glasgow School of Art's Digital Design Studio.

He said: "We made a three-dimensional survey of the entire site and terrain, accurate to within one centimetre.

"Such an accurate record has many uses. It can be used to help the custodians of a site manage it; for educational purposes; incorporating it into interactive booths to inform visitors; or to put it on the internet. It is also useful for emergency tasks such as flooding and disaster recovery."

Mr Russell, SNP MSP for the South of Scotland, visited New Lanark to see the results of the first study for himself.

He said: "I lived in Clydesdale between 1983 and 1991 and I got to know New Lanark very well. It is a site of which I have always been a fan. To see it represented in such a way is very exciting."

Dr Jim Arnold, director of New Lanark Trust, said: "I think this study is fascinating — right at the cutting edge."

It is expected that the unique new images will be available to view on New Lanark's website www.newlanark.org by the end of the year.
