Politicians support CRAG campaign against Overburns quarry

TWO more local politicians have expressed their support for Clyde River Action Group's campaign to try to prevent Patersons building a 90-acre sand and gravel quarry at Overburns Farm near Lamington.

A fortnight after the Gazette reported that Labour MSP Karen Gillon and Tory MP David Mundell were both strongly against the controversial proposal, South of Scotland MSPs Aileen Campbell (SNP) and Jim Hume (Liberal Democrats) have also hit out at the plan.

Aileen, whose recent survey of people living near the site showed an overwhelmingly negative response, said: "There is clearly extremely widespread concern among the local community about the proposals for a quarry at Overburns.

"I've still to compile the exact figures but it is clear the vast majority of people who have responded to my survey oppose the plans.

"Having received over 450 replies in a couple of weeks, I can only imagine how many formal letters of objection South Lanarkshire Council must have received."

Jim Hume is similarly minded. He said: "I am opposing these plans myself and have been in correspondence with the council and Patersons.

"It seems that the proposals offer more disbenefits (sic) than benefits."

CRAG chairperson Caroline Parker responded by saying: "Cross party support from the local politicians is overwhelming."

But Patersons' Estates Director Kemp Lindsay remains confident that South Lanarkshire councillors will grant planning approval.

Kemp said: "We have put forward what we consider is a well considered scheme that takes into account the environmental sensitivity of the area. It addresses all the concerns that have been received."
