Red Hose Race 2009

THERE was a fantastic atmosphere at the historic Red Hose Race in Carnwath, which was enjoyed in fine weather by 250 cheering supporters.

Quothquan's Jonathan Dale was the comfortable winner in a time of 16mins 10secs, with local man Scott McIntyre — a three-time former champion — this year's runner-up.

And third place went to Carnwath's Steven Graham.

Race organiser Melanie Irving said: "The event went very well and we were delighted with the support it received.

"Jonathan received a pair of traditional red stockings for first prize."

The oldest man to finish the 2009 race was 72-year-old Hugh Forrester from Carnwath, who was described as an inspiration to everyone.

Saturday's race — which started and finished at Sir John Mann Park — also featured fun runners including girls dressed up as fairies, women with Supermum t-shirts and a man who completed the course wearing wellington boots.

In 2006, the Red Hose Race entered the World Guinness Book of Records as the ''oldest road race'' in the world.
