Carluke 10k Road Race and 5k fun run 2009

THE leading competitors at Sunday's Carluke Development Trust 10k Road Race finished in the top three positions - despite running one kilometre further than everyone else!

A stewarding error meant that Eritranian runners Tsegezeah Woldemichael, Tewoldcebrhan Mengisteab and Tsegai Tewelde continued straight on instead of going down Station Road.

But, incredibly, all three athletes recovered after being redirected onto the correct route and finished a full two minutes ahead of the fourth-placed runner.

"It was a fantastic performance by the three of them," Carluke Development Trust chairman Tom Sneddon said."They ran at a blistering pace.

"It was our fault that they took a wrong turning because a steward didn't get there quite soon enough.

"We're sorry about it but at least we were able to catch them at the Crown Hotel and get them back on the right track."

Woldemichael's winning time of 33 mins 49 secs was two seconds ahead of the second placed athlete, with Tewelde a further 22 seconds back.

The day also featured a 5k Family Fun Run, which was won by Law and District AAC member Gary Grieve in 14 mins 23 secs.

First family home were brothers Gary and Daniel Grieve.
