Lanark United celebrate promotion

A DRAMATIC 90th minute penalty converted by Grant Cuthill gave Lanark United a coveted place in next season's Premier Superleague.

Despite having the pressure of the Royal Burgh on his shoulders, Cuthill stroked the ball into the net to give United a 2-0 victory over Ayrshire giants Glenafton and a 3-2 overall aggregate victory in the promotion play-off.

"It was a great result for us," delighted United secretary Tam Anderson said.

"It was a lovely night for football and the crowd of 400 created an excellent atmosphere.

"Grant would have been under a lot of pressure to score that penalty but he was very confident and stuck the ball away no problem. All credit to him.

"To qualify to play in the top league is very pleasing."

Tam revealed that the celebrations of United players and officials continued at The Woodpecker pub until late into the night.

He joked: "I didn't go to the pub. I think they were waiting on me going up to the bar!"

United went into the second leg trailing 2-1 following the first game at Glenafton last Wednesday night.

But fortune smiled on them at Moor Park on Friday.
