AFTER more than FOUR MONTHS without a home game, Lesmahagow Juniors could finally be set to play a fixture at their frequently waterlogged Craighead Park ground.

’Gow manager Robert Irving made numerous complaint phonecalls to pitch owners South Lanarkshire Council over several weeks, and is relieved that a team of workmen have finally installed an adequate drainage system to get the park playable again.

“It was a really frustrating time for us when we were getting home matches continually postponed,” Robert said.

“There was just one small area of the park about 10m² which was like a quagmire, but it was enough to make Craighead Park unplayable.

“The council laid underground pipes willy-nilly here in mid-December, without linking any of them to the troublesome area of the park where water was gathering. These pipes actually made the waterlogging worse.

“The park was an absolute disaster until a couple of weeks ago when works on the new system began.

“But it’s much better now because drainage has been installed which is linked to an existing manhole, so at least the water is running away somewhere.”

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: “Further to recent discussions with the manager we have installed further drainage to the area which should have alleviated the problem.

“We will monitor the situation and keep in touch with Mr Irving.”

Robert has his fingers crossed that Craighead Park will at last be playable for this Saturday’s scheduled home league clash against Carluke Rovers.

“It’s been tough not getting any revenue from home games for so long,” he said.

“The boys will be ready for Carluke. The pressure will all be on Carluke as they are top of the table.”
