New Lanark gym opens
Winston Gym launched after £80,000 worth of improvements
MONDAY morning saw the official opening of Lanark North Vennel's new Winston Gym. The premises have undergone 80,000 worth of building improvements and have 25 stations including free weights and a mixture of cardio vascular and resistance machines.
Two existing squash courts at the Winston club have been converted into a gym and multi-purpose dance class area and squash court. The third squash court will remain for exclusive squash use.
Councillor Gerry Convery said at the gym opening: ''I am delighted to be opening this excellent, newly improved, facility which everyone can enjoy and I am certain that it will prove to be a much better facility to serve the whole community.''
The refurbished facility, provided by South Lanarkshire Council and provided by South Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, has been provided after the enforced closure of the original gym. The old building has been shut since last February following a leakage into it from Lanark Pool's changing village, located directly above.
A decision was made to find an alternative venue for the gym, as repairs would only have limited the pool's already cramped facility.
A programme of exercise classes at the gym proved very popular when showcased at a recent come and try day.
